I was serving in a bar in Hood River, Oregon (the ultimate wind sport and outdoor sport mecca) this past summer when I overheard a table of old windsurfers complaining about the onslaught of kiteboarders on the Columbia Gorge. They were threatening to petition to have them removed from what once used to be windsurf launch only beaches.

As I passed I caught in ear shot that they would [petition] if kiting didn’t bring such beautiful athletic women to the beach. I had to laugh, as every day I rolled down to the event site (main launch beach for both sports) there would be more babes in bikinis pumping up kites. And as the sport grows with a decade of riding under its belt it is no surprise to see more girls move into professional riding and instructing.

With rider’s like Kristin Boese (once featured in German Playboy), Susie Mai, Claire Lutz, and new break out rider Dominique Granger from Canada, teams are welcoming the sport’s shred Bettys.

Dominique-Granger-kite-portrait2The REAL team in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina is especially known for breeding and bringing in female talent. This coming season the Real team welcomes last mentioned, Dominique Granger who is the freshest of female kiteboarding talent. She is sure to impress, with only two years of kiting, already throwing unhooked rolls and raileys as if it were child’s play.

I recently hit up the Real team managers Sam Bell and Jason Slezak as I wanted to be one of the first to get the lo down on this outrageous new talent. They put me in touch with Dominique, and not only is she talented and beautiful, she is way cool too (some girls have all the luck).

Dominique is a 23 year old Montreal, Quebec native. Her story into kiting is intriguing as she grew up afraid of water. She never went near the water until 2 years ago when she went to Hatteras to conquer her fear. For Dominique, the 3 day camp at REAL Watersports was the breaking point.

“I guess being taught by someone I didn’t know obligated me not to show my fears, and eventually get over them. Since the first ride on the board, kiteboarding has become the goal to reach; the guiding light that makes me work harder to get over my fear of water.” Dominique recalls.

Three years later Dominique has kited all over the world. “The first year I was riding, I spent the summer kiting in the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean near Victoria, BC.” She than moved to Hatteras the summer after and “ just spent the winter in Cabarete, Dominican Republic.”

Dominique has been fortunate in finding such a unique talent and passion. Now a coach at REAL in Hatteras her “goal at REAL is to ‘share the stoke!’” When I chatted with her I was inspired by her vision to bring her skills and passion to others.

“I really want to make people like kiteboarding as much as I do and prove that girls can shred on the water. I definitely want to bring more women and children in the sport!” Dominique has personal goals this season as well (that we all look forward to watching) although her determination to share kiteboarding is what makes her a great REAL team member. She fits right in with the crew at REAL. The crew has a great welcoming vibe and down home feel!

Upon introduction I immediately noticed how down to earth Dominique was. She loves working with people and she is able to make people feel comfortable no matter what the situation (and believe me the first few days of kiting can be terrifying). She is approachable, warm, and unbelievably talented.

During our interview, I did the usual Jenna Hannon quick draw to help us all get to know Dominique without reading a textbook. Here is what the Canadian kiting babe at REAL had to say:

Quick draw:

Jenna: Set up that you ride?

Dominique:

Kites: Naish Helixes: 5m-7m-9m

Board: Naish Haze 128cm

I also sometimes steal my boyfriend’s awesome Rawson 5’3 surfboard…

Jenna: Favorite trick?

Dominique: Raileys and unhooked rolls.. feels good! A good nose butter is always fun, as

well as strapless riding.

Jenna: Favorite place to kite?

Dominique: Cape Hatteras, NC, but also Nitinaht Lake, on Vancouver Island in Canada.

Jenna: Best kiting buddy?

Dominique: My boyfriend Trevor Murchie!

Jenna: New trick to learn?

Jenna: Favorite Vans shoe?

Dominique: The Wellesley and the design of the Parra models. The plaid of the Dustin

Dollin DD-66 is also pretty awesome! I always have a lot of favorite!!

pleasure of interviewing. Keep shredding Dominique and we look forward to seeing the

bag of tricks this summer!

Icelantic Skier, Jaron Stadler

jaronstadlerI am not tired of talking about powder and I am even less tired of talking about the skis that float it best; Icelantic. I had the pleasure of meeting Organic Colorado grown Icelantic team Skier, Jaron Stadler, last spring in Mammoth and it gave me exactly the right interpretation of this company. They don’t give a f*** about anything besides good wholesome skiing!

Jaron showed up at our team house (USC ski/snowboard team) with fellow Forefront rider Will Burman and Colorado snowboard buddy, Keith D’Angelo for another blue bird weekend in Mammoth, which happened to be his birthday. Jaron arrived about 12 beers deep and had no sign of stopping soon. It was a scene to say the least, but 12 beers or no beers, Jaron is the same happy go lucky guy who loves nothing more than to send it on his skis.

The entire weekend I spent with him quickly taught me that Jaron should be part of my full time entourage, as his excitement and pure stoke to ski is unmatchable. He woke up every morning at 7 am with a smile and shot straight tonewschoolers.com to see what trick he was going to try that day.

Perhaps my most favorite part of my Jaron infused weekend was our rendition of First Time Fridays. Let’s just say there was some breakfast champagne and a stomped switch back for Jaron on first attempt.

Jaron rides his Icelantic Da’nollies like no other Icelantic skier on the team and that is exactly what they want. Icelantic is all about being an individual and riding your skis hard no matter where you take them. I checked back in with Jaron to see just how his Icelantic journey was going in his new home of Tahoe for the season.

How is the new digs in Nor Cal?

Its super fun!! Its been snowin like crazy so lots of pow for sure!! And the parks aren’t bad either!!

How does it compare to your homeland of Colorado?

jaronstadler2The parks just are not the same..not as big…but the mountains are really fun so I cant complain. I still ski everyday so life is good!!

What have you been working on this season?

I’ve just been doin everything I can! Trying really hard to film n stuff like that!

Whats next for First Time Fridays when I see you in mammoth next?

I guess well have to wait an see???!!

Which team rider’s have been influencing you this season?

There’s so many influential skiers out there now a days its really hard to just pick one! It just really depends on style, in my eyes! It’s all bout makin everything look good right!??!

Give us the run down of the Icelantic ski line-up this year?

There are five different models in the 09′-10′ line. They are all based on the five sense’s, sight, smell, etc. There are the Nomad’s, Shaman’s, Da’Nollie, Pilgrim’s, and the Scout’s. Between the five models there is a ski for everything/everyone! And rumor has it that theres a rocker ski comin out for next year!

What are you riding? Skis? Boots? Bindings?

Well when im riding in the park or when theres no powder im always on my Danollies. Then in the pow I’m on my Nomad sft. My boots are the classic salomon spk and my bindings are a wide variety of Look bindings from the 90s. I’m pretty sure those are the best tho!

What is the formula for riding like Jaron?

Ummm, just do what feels good! Try to make it look dope and try new things that u dont really see other people doin! It’s all bout bein unique n switchin it up sometimes, doin ur own thang!

It looks like we have a lot to look forward to from Jaron. Keep rockin’ and we look forward to this season’s First Time Fridays!

Interview and words by Jenna Hannon

This summer I bumped into one of the most inspiring young rider’s to hit the technical kiteboarding scene in the last few years, Jon Van Malsen at an outdoor bonfire and rail jam in Hood River, Oregon. Jon is one of the most encouraging riders to hit the Gorge this summer and it was a pleasure to even catch the same gust!

Fully set in wonderland, Jon is sponsored by North and takes his travels pretty lightly. For Jon Van Malsen, traveling the globe to throw down some a clean flat 3’s is child’s play and emerging from a smoke filled van to hit the water for a day of riding is ordinary procedure.

Just the other day Jon and I caught up and had a chat on Fbook. He sent me some new footage fresh from the seas of Brazil that encouraged some announcement. If this doesn’t make you jealous, stoked, or constipated you are clearly not watching close enough.  After watching several times I had to get the scoop from Jon about the riding in Brazil. So check out below a few words from the Cali boy who really didn’t need this elaborate introduction of greatness.

Jenna: We will start with the general. Gear? Board? Kite? Outlandish kiting kook accessories you might want to elaborate on?

Jon: NorthKiteboarding.com, kooks might want to always wear a helmet and pads hah

Jenna: Your base trick or the automatic go to (the trick you do every sesh)?

Jon: I never pick a specific trick to focus on its always changing.

Jenna: How has your Brazil experiences positively affected your riding thus far?

Jon: It’s good warm and tons of wind

Jenna: Favorite spot to ride?

Jon: Sherman Island, The Gorge

Jenna: Who are the riding buddies?

Jon: Rienstra, and the rest of the cali crew represent…

Jenna: The next trick on your to-do-trick-list?

Jon: Flat rotations are the future

Jenna: How are you going to possibly return to civilization when returning from living the dream?

Jon: Hopefully it never Ends :)

Living the Dream ain’t so bad and there is no one I would rather watch doing it then Jon. Some inspiring words to vibe on for the week. Thanks Jon for the great video and Adrenaline Hot Tub looks forward to following your continual journey of pure kiting bliss.
